JOKE BOOKS?

if you want to know if you should use a joke book for the comedy material in your act I say it depends on you.I am a writer first so I write my own material,being a ventriloquist is mostly self preparation so in developing a character or personality for a ventriloquist figure will take some creative writing.I have seen many ventriloquist acts that use jokes from a joke book and I can see the punchlines coming.my vision of a ventriloquist act is two people carrying on a conversation in front of a circle of people that is the audience,the ventriloquist dummy might try to show off,the ventriloquist figure or dummy might notice a cute boy or girl sitting in the audience or the ventriloquist figure might have a wondering eye.I say writing your own material is fresh but a joke book is easier.I used a joke book when I get writers block or a brain fart,I have learned that if I constantly write I eliminate writeblock.using joke books is like having help,it also take away originality.let me be clear,sure I understand that writing material is not easy I am only comparing using joke book material to self writing.using a joke book is fast food and self writing is a home cooked meal.a joke book is good for everyone not just performers,a joke book is good to keep in your back pocket just like any other book,in fact I think a joke book should be next to your bed. jokes are good and healthy dirty or clean if it's funny.When I was a student of comedy I bought over three hundred joke books,I heard them all political,racial,sex,blonde,you name any subject I heard a joke on it.I remember when I couldn't write a joke on my own for sammy,I had to use jokes from a joke book,that was yesterday and after studying hard in the school of comedy,today my writing is strong for "sammy" that means,I write my own shit!,do you know what it's like to write your own,it's powerful!

(HIRING A JOKE WRITER)
when I quit travel with a live band of musicians,I enter the comedy club circuit, before going into the comedy clubs I perform at night clubs, I write my own material during this time..going into the comedy clubs was a real eye opener for vann duke and Sammy, my material for nightclubs was not working in the comedy club, there are comedy club writers and comedy writers that visit comedy clubs,so I hired one to write for Vann duke and Sammy, comedy writers have files of content and material, the writer will ask me so what do you want to talk about or what do Sammy want to talk about, and I say school, the writer will hand me about ten pages
of papers with school jokes on them, on these pages at home I choose the jokes I want to use, I think buying a joke book is cheaper than hiring a joke writer but the difference is a joke writer that you hire help you with creative ideas also, the writer also has a file of many many subjects such as, if I am at a comedy club,I might want to talk about how to land on the moon, my joke writer will have the content I need to talk about how to land on the moon in a humorous way, now in real life I know nothing about landing on the moon..if you tell your joke writer personal information about you the writer can write better material for you,instead of just jokes, your audience become more closer to you as a entertainer, the writer can bring reality and unbelief together into one story line...I stop hiring joke writers because Sammy felt like I was cheating on him by getting my content and material from someone else.....I dropped the comedy writers and Sammy return to his acting a fool bit,that went very well in the comedy clubs also.

(THE VENTRILOQUIST TREE OF KNOWLEDGE)
if you are going to be a ventriloquist, you need to learn more than just ventriloquism, well, let me just say the more you learn the more you know and the more you know the smarter you become and smart is knowledge and knowledge is...POWER.. it's basically indulging your mind into study, such as magic, speech, voice, impersonating people-animals-sounds-etc..acting, theater, puppetry, art, dolls, singing, mime, writing, cartoon drawing or artist..these are studies that can cost you nothing or if you choose to pay,it's your choice. today we have audio books,these audio books will read the book out loud to you, so I suggest after you study the art of ventriloquism and during your amateur ventriloquist time to study another subject that I have mentioned in this chapter such as magic, pick up a book on magic, learn about magicians and how to do magic continue performing as amateur ventriloquist then after you believe in magic add magic to your ventriloquist act, continue to study acting and theater, so that your audience become part of your beliefs..speech is a very important study,it will teach you presentation, delivery,and much more, take the time read about dolls, doll maker are very gifted and talented artists that do not get very much credit today, I own many dolls today for my production company, dolls are made with details of art in mind, I mean some of the image of likeness are spot on, such as Marilyn Monroe.
maybe take some singing lessons during your amateur ventriloquist time because even though it's easier to sing than to talk as a ventriloquist, it's just good have the lessons or study in your back pocket..surely all these studies will take time,which is good,it's time well spent that kept me out of trouble,hopefully the art will do the same for you,for sure you will never get bored.
