"NETWORKING"
being a semi pro ventriloquist I was always on the go and on the move.in my days as a amateur ventriloquist I did a lot of looking for places to do shows.I kept notebooks of phone numbers and addresses of places that had open Mic night, talent show promoters,I had the names and numbers to the local library with the librarian,I did shows at the library,my act was magic and storytelling,I would read a story book to children in the library and sammy would add humor and comedy while I read the story.Mrs.Eldred was a librarian that put a talent show together,so I could host it,she also had a local cable television company film the talent show,it's weird that as an amateur I was hosting and master of ceremonies of a talent show on cable television,I saw me and sammy on cable television,I was so happy,it was local television but for a amateur it was wonderful! in networking you never know where one lead will lead,I went from storytelling to hosting a neighborhood library talent show on a local cable television station.thank you Mrs.Eldred!...I remember when my calendar for shows was running low on paid gigs,I get on the phone and start making calls, some shows were a month away, for an example,a wedding in June,a school in July, ten birthday parties in August.being a ventriloquist in show business the birthday party was plenty of work because everyone has a birthday and everybody wants entertainment for their birthday.birthday shows kept me in business but I had to keep my shows affordable.in networking every person in the audience has a birthday,a wedding,a business that need a grand opening.yes I remember those days of cold calling,I realized that I could not be lazy if I wanted to be a ventriloquist,I would mail business cards and photo fliers no matter if my calendar was full of shows or not.I remember a retirement home director book me for the weekly entertainment, with this deal,I was looking at my calendar of shows and I am on the phone with the activity director of the retirement home, she was saying she has a piano player weekly that fit the facility budget,so I am looking at my calendar and said don't you worry about the budget,I have music,COMEDY,magic and sing alongs, the director said she needed to talk to her boss, she'll call me back,so I hang up the phone to make more calls and the director called me back in about twenty minutes, she made some very very odd deals with her boss on speaker phone,so I am looking at my calendar of shows as the director and her boss pitch the odd deals to me "vann duke and sammy", have you ever just sweated for no reason at all,so at the end of the call the director and her boss was very happy but I was sweating a storm.so this was a weekly live entertainment gig for senior citizens in retirement events with the assistance of the piano player.what's the deal?,the boss cut the piano player funds in stage time and put me in as a filler, this was a bad deal for the entertainers, but for director and her boss a good deal because she got more show variety for less,a two for one price, now that's a smart business woman.
